The first movement begins with a theme closely resembling the shepherd-king Aminta’s first-act aria “Aer tranquillo” from his recently-composed opera, Il rè pastore, KV208: “Tranquil air and serene days, fresh springs and green fields, these are the prayers to fortune of the shepherd and his flocks.” The solo sections contain additional themes beyond those stated in the orchestral introduction, and the oboes and horns have a more significant role than in Mozart’s earlier violin concertos.

Yet, the orchestra functions as a mere offset to display the soloists� ostentation, as they swoop into notes and thoroughly dominate the piece. (Sadly, the first movement is abridged by nearly half, thus depriving it of its accustomed import.) In a sense, the balance seems symbolic, of assertive individuals escaping from a faceless collective � and, indeed, most of the great Russian instrumentalists, including Rostropovich, blossomed only as expatriates. Instead of calling it a "parody mass", the term "Imitation mass" has been suggested as being both more precise and closer to the original usage, since the term "parody" is based on a misreading of a late 16th century text.
