An international team of astronomers has discovered within the heart of a nearby spiral galaxy a quasar whose light spectrum indicates that it is billions of light years away. See spectacular views of two different layers of the sun through white-light and hydrogen-alpha 0.6 Angstrom filters. Recent Visitors to our Website Came From the following places on Earth: Freshly Discovered Earth-Like Planet Orbiting Nearby Star Could Be the First Truly Habitable Exoplanet A couple of math geeks recently calculated that the discovery of the first “habitable” exoplanet would be announced in May of next year -- but a few stargazers from UC Santa Cruz and their colleagues simply couldn’t wait that long.

UA’s Moundville Archaeological Park is 13 miles south of campus off Alabama 69. The Forever War by Joe Haldeman is another special book. Use your binoculars to view beyond the Milky Way. Amateur astronomers often contribute toward activities such as monitoring the changes in brightness of variable stars and supernovae, helping to track asteroids, and observing occultations to determine both the shape of asteroids and the shape of the terrain on the apparent edge of the Moon as seen from Earth.

That would be a terrific way to remember him. And for that reason, both Mercury and Venus show phases as seen from Earth at certain times in their orbit – a few days before or after the planet passes between the sun and Earth. Sunday December 23 2:00 p.m. It's always fun to just take the back-to-basics approach with a decent pair of binoculars, but what's the fun in that doing it alone in the middle of a cold night? If not, everyone in New Hampshire is welcome to join the NH Astronomical Society. 23.

This philosopher was admired by many in Athens and counted the great Socrates amongst his disciples. Because of the thickness, they are totally opaque to visible light; however, they can be studied using infrared and radio techniques. The visibility of stars is impaired by “light pollution” caused primarily by stray upward illumination from poorly designed outdoor lighting. Hence, it is relatively easier to measure both the amplitude and phase of radio waves, whereas this is not as easily done at shorter wavelengths. [43] Although some radio waves are produced by astronomical objects in the form of thermal emission, most of the radio emission that is observed from Earth is the result of synchrotron radiation, which is produced when electrons orbit magnetic fields. [43] Additionally, a number of spectral lines produced by interstellar gas, notably the hydrogen spectral line at 21 cm, are observable at radio wavelengths. [12] [43] ALMA Observatory is one of the highest observatory sites on Earth.

This Interactive will show you why, and allow you to understand how the Moon’s phases are linked to where and when each phase appears in the sky. One of the Milky Way’s numerous stellar nurseries; the Omega Nebula is about 5,000 light-years from Earth and can be seen in the constellation of Sagittarius the Archer.
