There are no larval stages of development. There is a very dark line down the center of the head and two dark spots above each side of the jaw. Unfortunately, Highlands County's dry uplands are prime areas for development and the tortoises habitat is being destroyed at an astonishing rate. Modern turtles can trace their lineage back 220 million years! It cannot be defined by synapomorphies, as is the proper way. Birds and mammals, which use their internal metabolic heat for body warmth, are referred to as endothermic. All animals that live in fresh water must cope with a continual inflow of water from their hypotonic environment. Begin the race with the turtles near the children’s hands. As a class organize animals in to two groups based off of characteristics like slimy smooth skin or rough scaly skin. (See attachments for pictures) § After sorting the animals discuss with the students that these groups have special names: reptiles and amphibians. (Write Special title above the correct board.) § Write down corresponding characteristics and discuss their meanings while students complete their Venn diagram. § When discussing cold-blooded feature of reptiles and amphibians relate this to the need of adaptations like Camouflage to avoid predators.
