They felt that an entire American tradition had been betrayed. Lutheranism stood better in the eyes of the world, and had more adherents around it now than when he entered Augsburg. In contrast, the church was an association that individuals joined voluntarily. And we're a little bit suspicious that the Gospel of Mark may actually be written to or have some association with the Roman Church as well. What a contrast to the gilded and painted chambers above!
