There was a good deal of disagreement over the question of images in and around churches, and over the precise role of music in church services, but there was a universal belief that divine services should be held in the vernacular and that the laity (the 'people') should participate in these services. On the Protestant side may be recommended the voluminous writings of CREIGHTON and GARDINER, both fair-minded. Some recanted, some fled into exile, some became avowed Protestants, some fled to the shelter of Marguerite de Navarre's court.

Luther believed them to be “not mere heretics but open blasphemers; are rulers are in duty bound to punish blasphemers” [65]. You cannot hit a spirit, not even the Roman spirit. . ." Both articles show a drawing of a human brain. We also see in Scripture that Our Lord said He would be with His Church forever and that it would never fail. The Reformers set forth the Bible and opposed all false religious systems. The two principal cheeses of this plateau are Lutheranism and Calvinism. The Dutch Republic, a small country that had only become a political entity in 1579 and was still suffering from the effects of a long and arduous war with Spain, would hardly seem to have had the resources to nourish and sustain its artistic traditions.

Eastern Europe offered a seedbed for even more radical varieties of Protestantism, because kings were weak, nobles strong, and cities few, and because religious pluralism had long existed. This is not only commonly understood but is specified in the rituals themselves. In churches just a couple miles from where I’m writing this essay in New Haven, and in other towns for hundreds of miles around, men and women were once caught up in controversial and unmanageable ecstasies. Now I remember an exasperated Catholic friend asking, “Don’t some Protestants know anything else about the Catholic Church besides the problems we had in the sixteenth century?” And when Luther made a centerpiece out of what the Bible said about “The righteous shall walk by faith,” which was in the Bible’s readings today, he changed it, chiefly by using it as a battle axe to attack his opponents and even things he didn’t like in Scripture.

Nevertheless, Calvin's consistory was widely admired and copied because early Reformed churches needed some way to maintain discipline over their members so that the Lord's Supper—their only important ceremony, usually celebrated only four times a year—could be properly administered. They chased him about the grounds all day, howling, jeering, and yelling. Actually, you have misrepresented the issue entirely. The next two chapters explain in broad strokes what Weber meant by the "Protestant Ethic" and the "Spirit of Capitalism".

For, if every man is his own supreme teacher and is able to justify himself by an easy act of faith, there is no further need of ordained teachers and ministers of sacrifice and sacraments. Still, the ultimate goal is that the sinner be returned to the Church. Scripture is the sole source of Christian revelation. Spiritual death, which is of greater significance, is the separation of the soul from God. This arrangement was to my view perfectly defensible, because under the circumstances of the case I must either have done nothing in the way of ministerial labor until qualified for full service, or in my enfeebled & broken state I must have bound myself down at once to the full service & responsibility of a pastoral relation, or I must do as I did, cast myself on a kind providence which opened right beside me the arms & hearts of an affectionate congregation, who bade me come & do what I could.

New York County Wills, 21: 365; and Calendar of Wills, page 417. He acquired a large following and was elected preacher by the city magistrates. Four years later, at the Diet of Västerås, the king succeeded in forcing the diet to accept his dominion over the national church. Fairly early on, however, the terms was broadened, and Calvinists began to call themselves Protestants, and to be called Protestants by others. Had Clement granted the annulment and therefore admitted that his predecessor, Julius II, had erred, Clement would have given support to the Lutheran assertion that Popes replaced their own judgement for the will of God.

Each of the early settlements had its own ideas about how to do this, and those with different views were encouraged to move on. Their unwillingness to accept religious persecution led the Bohemians to declare Ferdinand deposed; they invited the elector palatine, perhaps the most important Calvinist German prince, to take the Bohemian throne from its Habsburg incumbent. St Cyril of Jerusalem (circa 315-386) urged those he was instructing in the Christian faith: "If ever thou art sojourning in cities, inquire not simply where the Lord's House is, nor merely where the Church is, but where is the Catholic Church.
