Significantly, when the terrorists carried out their sensational series of attempts and assassinations during 1892 and 1893, the libertarian intelligentsia, far from deserting anarchism, saw in these acts of isolated protest great expressions of individuality. Freedom and equality are not contradictory, but complementary; in place of the old polarisation of freedom versus equality - according to which we are told that more freedom equals less equality, and more equality equals less freedom - anarchists point out that in practice you cannot have one without the other.

Excessive need for certitude lurks at fundamentalist levels in politics, religions, and elsewhere. The same thing applies for everything: software that can be improved and made into many flavors to suit many needs (different interfaces, purposes, compatibilities with hardware); blueprints for tools that can be used by anyone for whatever purposes; hardware that anyone can improve and use (make your own smartphone from other people’s designs and ideas). 3D printers already work this way, where people from around the world share their designs and improvements, so anyone can make 3D models of those designs, using their own printer that was “printed” by another printer, all open-source.

The anarcho-communist Nestor Makhno, who later during the Russian Civil War led an independent anarchist guerrilla army in the Ukraine against Bolshevik forces, also met with Lenin. Indeed, given the amount of violent oral and written propaganda that began to emanate from anarchist sources in France after the London Congress of 1881, and the enthusiasm aroused by the populist assassination of the Czar Alexander II in 1881, it is surprising that the wave of terrorism mounted so slowly to its peak at the beginning of the 1890's. Carried out it -454finally amounts to this, which I also believe, -- "That government is best which governs not at all," and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have.
